About the Bristlenose Pleco

The Bristlenose Pleco, also known as the Bushynose Plecostomus, is a popular and peaceful freshwater fish known for its algae-eating habits and unique appearance. They are relatively small, typically reaching 4-6 inches in length, and have a distinctive set of bristles or whiskers around their mouths, particularly prominent in males. 

This species does very well with driftwood being present in their aquarium. Driftwood is an excellent source of biofilm, which these plecos, in addition to shrimp and other biofilm grazers depend on as a part of their diet.

Husbandry & Care

Temperament: Peaceful, males can be territorial towards other fish when breeding

Minimum Tank Size: 20 Gallons; 40+ Gallons if more than one male is present

Water Temperature: 72-82 °F

Water pH: 6.5-7.8

Social Group: Can be kept solitary or in a small group depending on tank size. A breeding pair will thrive in a 29+ Gallon aquarium.

Diet: Omnivorous; Sinking Bottom Feeder Pellets, Algae, Blanched Vegetables

Compatible with: Bettas, Guppies, Angelfish, Discus, Tetras & other schooling fish. Almost all peaceful and semi aggressive community fish that can live within the same environmental parameters. Avoid aggressive and highly territorial fish
