About the Convict Cichlid

Convict cichlids, also known as convict striped cichlids, are freshwater fish characterized by their distinctive black and white vertical stripes, resembling a convict's uniform. These fish, scientifically named Amatitlania nigrofasciata, are relatively small, typically reaching about 4-6 inches in length. They are known for their aggressive and territorial behavior, especially during breeding season.

Minimum Tank Size: 40 Gallons

Water Temperature: 75-82 °F

Water pH: 6.0-8.0

Social Group: M/F Pair; multiple pairs need to go in a larger aquarium

Diet: Omnivorous; this species will readily consume commercial flakes/pellets, live baby artemia, daphnia, frozen brine shrimp/bloodworms.

Compatible with: Not recommended to be kept with other fish. Convicts have been observed to challenge larger cichlids and other fish.
