About the Buffalo Head Cichlid
The Buffalo Head Cichlid, scientifically known as Steatocranus casuarius, is a unique freshwater fish native to the Congo River basin in Africa. They are also called Lionhead or Blockhead Cichlids due to the prominent hump that develops on the head of males as they mature. These cichlids are known for their semi-aggressive, territorial behavior, especially during breeding, and their preference for well-oxygenated water with strong currents. The fish like to dig, so a sandy substrate is required. They often enjoy digging tunnels under aquarium decor. We strongly recommend using silicone to secure decorations and rocks in place, so they do not fall on fish.
