About the African Butterfly Fish

The African Butterfly Fish (Pantodon buchholzi) is a unique freshwater fish known for its distinctive appearance and surface-dwelling habits. They have large pectoral fins that resemble butterfly wings and are typically brownish or grayish with a silver sheen. 

They are ambush predators, with upward-facing eyes and a large, upturned mouth adapted for catching insects and small fish at the water's surface. 

They are relatively hardy and can live for up to 10 years in captivity with proper care.

Temperament: Semi-Aggressive

Minimum Tank Size: 40 Gallons, this species prefers and thrives in wider aquariums than taller ones

Water Temperature: 74-86 °F

Water pH: 6.5-7.2

Social Group: Solitary

Diet: Carnivorous; Frozen Fish Food (Bloodworms, Brine Shrimp), Live Flightless Fuit Flies, Crickets. Individuals may sometimes not accept commercial foods, however offering a higher protein food will suffice if the fish find it palatable.

Compatible with: Bristlenose Pleco, Catfish (Corydoradinae- formerly Corydoras), larger non-agressive or fin-nipping tetras, Elephant Nosed Fish
